Date Rape

I was naive enough to think or hope that Date Rape doesn’t exist any more. An article on a German website taught me otherwise:

Of course it was completely naive to think that a culture of consense and a positive, reponsible attitude towards sexuality – the own and other’s – should now be prevalent at least among younger people.

On the one side, the attitude towards sexuality is very much a cultural thing, and so quite complex. On the other side: There are rules. Very simple ones. „No means no“ for example. But that’s not good enough. The rule to follow is: „Yes means yes“ (and nothing else means yes: Not passivity, or not saying no). I cite Jaclyn Friedman in the introduction to the very interesting collection of essays „Yes means yes“:

Das werden viele kennen, von früher, als man oder frau noch unerfahren waren; und Mist verdammter, wie ich kürzlich las, gibt’s das 30 Jahre später immer noch: „Date Rape“ genannt, weil es passiert mit jemandem, den oder die man/frau freiwillig und hoffnungsvoll in sein Leben gelassen hatte. Und dann hat Man / Frau sich nicht genug gewehrt, gedacht: „Was soll’s“, oder „Mist, jetzt ist es wohl zu spät, nein zu sagen“ – oder wurde schlicht überwältigt, vergewaltigt von jemandem, dem er oder sie vertraute. Und kriegt den Vertrauensbruch nicht verarbeitet, kann sich nicht eingestehen, dass gerade ein Verbrechen stattgefunden hat. Oder man sich was hat „gefallen“ lassen, und es war total falsch und man hat den Ausstieg nicht hingekriegt, und macht sich selbst Vorwürfe. Wer geht da rechtzeitig ins Krankenhaus; und dann womöglich zur Polizei – man hört sie doch alle schon sagen: „Die waren doch zusammen“; oder „Da will sich bloß wer rächen“).
